Windshield Camera Calibration After New Glass

ADAS stands for advanced driver assistance systems, the lane keeping, automatic braking and adaptive cruise features that see the road through a camera mounted behind your windshield at the mirror. When we replace the glass, that camera comes off and goes back on, and it can end up aimed a hair off. Wes Tallman runs most of our calibrations himself, with 12 years in auto glass behind him.

Calibration is like hanging a picture with a level: a hair off at the nail is crooked across the whole wall. A camera that's off by a degree can misjudge a lane line or a stopped car far down the road. We calibrate every camera windshield we install, and we'll tell you plainly if your car needs a target board in a garage. We've calibrated cars from 2018 through 2026 models, and in our opinion a printout should come with every camera windshield.

What Every Calibration Visit Includes

  • A scan with a diagnostic tool before and after
  • A check of tire pressure, fuel and alignment
  • The correct method for your car, static or dynamic
  • Targets placed at measured distances, or a driven test
  • A printout showing the calibration passed
  • Notes on warning lights and what to do next

Types of ADAS Calibration We Do

Different cars want different methods. We follow what the carmaker asks for.

  • Forward-Facing Camera Calibration

The big one. The camera behind the mirror reads lane lines, signs and cars ahead. After a new windshield it's aimed again, either on a target stand or on a drive.

  • Lane Keep Assist Calibration

If your car nudges you back into the lane, it depends on that camera seeing the lines in the right place. We check the aim and test that the nudge happens at the right moment.

  • Automatic Emergency Braking Calibration

The camera tells the car when to brake for you. IIHS found that front crash prevention cuts police-reported rear-end crashes by about 50%, which only works if the camera is aimed correctly.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control Calibration

Cruise control that holds a gap to the car ahead. On many cars the windshield camera and a radar work together, so we check both.

  • Rain and Light Sensor Check

The rain sensor, the auto high beams and the light sensor sit near the same spot behind the mirror. We confirm they work after the new glass is in.

  • Static and Dynamic Calibration

Static is aiming the camera at a target board. Dynamic is a test drive on marked roads with a scan tool plugged in. Some cars need one, some the other, a few need both.

Do I Need ADAS Calibration After a Windshield Replacement?

Most likely, if your car has a camera behind the windshield for lane keeping, automatic braking or adaptive cruise control. Carmakers usually require recalibration after the glass is replaced, because the camera is removed and refit. Tell us your year, make and model and we'll look up what yours calls for.

Cars That Usually Need It

Most vehicles from about 2018 on have some camera or sensor behind the glass. Pickups, SUVs and crossovers from the major makers are very likely to. If your dash shows a lane icon, a collision warning light or an automatic braking setting, assume the answer is yes until we confirm.

How to Check Your Car

  • Look for a small camera housing behind the mirror
  • Check the dash for a lane keep or collision warning setting
  • Open the owner's manual and look up driver assistance
  • Ask us, and send a VIN if you have it

Why Calibration Matters on Rapid City Roads

Between I-90 at highway speed, the grades on Highway 16 and winter lane lines half hidden under road sand, your car's camera works harder here than in a flat town. A camera that's slightly off reads lane lines in the wrong spot, so the nudge comes late or the warning chirps for no reason. Both are signs it needs aiming again.

How Much Does Windshield Camera Calibration Cost?

Windshield camera calibration usually costs about $150 to $400 in Rapid City. AAA's 2023 study found $360 on average to calibrate a windshield camera to new glass, about a quarter of the repair bill. If you buy the windshield and calibration together, we quote them as one price.

  • Calibration alone: about $150 to $400
  • Windshield with camera plus calibration: $650 to $1,300
  • Static calibration: usually 1 to 2 hours
  • Dynamic calibration: usually 30 to 60 minutes

ADAS Calibration Step by Step

  1. Scan and Set Up

We scan the car, check tire pressure and fuel, and place the targets or plan the test route. About 20 minutes.

  2. Calibrate

Static means we aim the camera at the targets. Dynamic means we drive at set speeds on marked roads. 30 to 120 minutes.

  3. Test and Print

We scan again, check that the warnings are clear and print the result for you to keep.

ADAS Calibration FAQs

What is ADAS calibration?

ADAS calibration is aiming the camera behind your windshield so lane keeping, automatic braking and adaptive cruise control read the road correctly. It's done with printed targets at measured distances or a test drive with a scan tool, depending on what your carmaker requires.

Can I skip calibration after a windshield replacement?

You can, but we wouldn't. A camera that's a degree off may warn too late, brake wrong or chirp for no reason. Many carmakers require it. If you're not sure, tell us your year, make and model and we'll check.

Does calibration have to be done at a shop?

Not always. Some cars calibrate with a test drive and we can do that in the van. Others need a target board in a level garage, and we'll set up in yours or tell you what the car needs.

How much does windshield camera calibration cost?

About $150 to $400 on its own in Rapid City. AAA found an average of $360 to calibrate a windshield camera after replacement. If the windshield comes with it, we quote one price for glass and calibration.

Why does my lane warning chirp after a new windshield?

Often the camera needs recalibrating. When the glass comes off and goes back on, the camera's aim can change slightly. A recalibration usually clears the warning. If it doesn't, we'll look at the camera mount and the scan results.

Do all cars need calibration?

No. Older cars and some base models have no camera behind the glass. Anything with lane keeping, automatic braking or adaptive cruise control likely does. Look for the camera housing behind the mirror or ask us.
